Making the Move

For many, relocating may be a requirement when pursuing a summer internship. Most of the time, it’s next to impossible to find the perfect position within commuting distance from our hometowns or schools. With the right preparation, however, it can shape up to be one of the best parts of your summer experience. Here are three tips on making the move for a summer internship and using it to your full advantage.

Do your research. We all know how important it is to be prepared. Before you start packing, head over to your trusty Google browser and do some quick searches about the city and the area. Many cities will have guides for visitors outlining special programs or tips for first timers. Even better, you can start to get a handle on what areas you will be frequenting and where the best places to eat, drink and enjoy what your new city has to offer.

Reach out to your employer. Since they are the reason you’re stepping outside of your comfort zone, don’t be afraid to reach out to your contact at your new position and ask his or her advice on what you need to know the area. As a current resident, they’ll have valuable insight into the area you won’t be able to get through a Google search.

Keep an open mind. One of the most helpful aspects when trying to make the most out of a new experience is to have a “say yes” mentality. Go to happy hour with coworkers. Attend company events. Do whatever you can that gets you out in the area and meeting new people. Not only will you acquaint yourself with the city, but you may even get a few free meals, which will go a long way on your intern salary.

Summer internships are an excellent opportunity to make connections and most importantly get experience not available in a classroom. Don’t let the fear of relocating keep you from taking a chance on yourself and propelling your career to the next step.
